BY ALBERT AMATEAU | Alphie McCourt, a writer and memoirist whose columns have appeared in The Villager, died suddenly at home on the Upper West Side while taking an afternoon nap on July 2. He was Born in Limerick, Ireland, Alphonsus Joseph McCourt was the youngest brother of the late Frank McCourt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and of Malachy McCourt, the writer and actor. Another older brother, Michael, of San Francisco, died last year. As a young man who came to New York to live for a time with Frank, 10 years his elder, Alphie found work wherever he could and eventually owned two restaurants in Manhattan. In he married Lyn Rockman, who survives, as does their daughter, Allison.

For 20 years, from until he retired in , Alphie worked for the Penn South Co-op in Chelsea in charge of apartment restorations in the 2,unit residential complex. Brendan Keany, general manager of Penn South, recalled meeting Alphie in the late s at Allison’s, named for Alphie’s and Lyn’s daughter. Early life

Alphie McCourt was born in Limerick, Ireland on 29 July , the youngest son of Malachy McCourt (–) and Angela Sheehan (–).

Writing

Following in the footsteps of his elder brothers Frank McCourt and Malachy McCourt, Alphie had his own memoir A Long Stone's Throw published in The book was well received. He had published articles in The Washington Post, The Villager and The Limerick Leader prior to writing his memoir.

Death

He died on 29 July , 27 days before his 76th birthday. His brother Michael had died the previous September, 9 months earlier. He was survived by his brother Malachy.

Alphonsus (Alphie) McCourt, youngest brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt, died on July 2nd in Manhattan. He would have been 76 on July 29th. He is survived by his wife Lynn, his daughter Allison, and the last surviving McCourt brother, Malachy.

“He was feeling unwell this afternoon and thought he’d lie down,” Ellen McCourt, Frank’s widow, told IrishCentral, “and he never woke up.”

McCourt was the author of A Long Stone’s Throw (Sterling and Ross, ), a memoir. The primary theme of the book, he told Jerry Tallmer of the The Villager newspaper, was the family’s chronic indigence: “Poverty flew in, love flew out,” he said, matter-of-factly.

His book details his life in Ireland, Canada, and the United States and his battle for survival—which was manifested in the amazing range of odd jobs he held over the years: “You know how all the jobs some writer has had are listed on the jacket of the book? Well, my life is like a big book jacket.”
