Brown Enough: True Stories About Love, Violence, the Student Loan Crisis, Hollywood, Race, Familia, and Making It in America

October 13,
Thank you to Netgalley for an early audiobook copy for review.

"Brown Enough" was a delightful book to listen to. Narrated by the author himself, this book felt like you were sitting across the table from him at a coffee shop, just chatting about life- your hopes, dreams, fears, concerns- sharing thoughts and experiences as a brown person in America.

Christopher Rivas is very thoughtful in recounting his failures and his successes as real moments in his life that taught him something, and is careful to emphasize that he is still learning- that we all are.

I enjoyed this book primarily because it made me feel less alone. I'm not the only one who has these thoughts, I'm not the only one who struggles in this way, who ponders their vague place in the middle, who deals with microaggressions and the unrealistic expectations of people we encounter in every day life who want to categorize us into easily-understood boxes and are surprised or frustrated when we don't fit.

I Think the Clock Is Broken

You could not step twice into the same river; for other waters are ever flowing on to you. Heraclitus (c. – BCE)

Sixteen years. Sixteen years of sitting in meditation, and I still think the clock is broken.

I set the timer, whichever little ticking tool that I use to guide my practice. I sit down, settle in, close my eyes, get still, and inevitably, at some point, a thought barges in: “The timer must be broken,” or “the clock must have died,” or “did I forget to set the alarm, there’s no way it hasn’t been thirty minutes already.” I’ve heard that voice hundreds of times. Maybe thousands. And every once in a while, even though I know I set the timer right, I break, I give in and crack an eye open to check, only to see the seconds slipping by exactly as they should. Then, just moments after I close my eyes again, the alarm rings—right on time.

But why? After all these years of practice, why does the thought of sitting still without a specific end make me so uncomfortable? Am I afraid I might never get up? Am I afraid I will miss some life if the alarm doesn’t ring? Is this time anxiety, or simply general anxiety anxiety?
