South Africa's 'Dr Death' Basson found guilty of misconduct

The media dubbed him "Dr Death" when details of the secret programme emerged after minority rule ended; he was accused of producing illegal drugs and creating viruses that would only attack black people.

But Basson escaped a criminal conviction in , arguing that he had acted on the orders of the former South African Defence Force (SADF) when he was involved in the chemical and biological warfare programme.

He is now a cardiologist in Cape Town.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) investigated whether he should be struck off the doctor's roll for providing soldiers with cyanide capsules.

"The breaches of medical ethics amount to unprofessional conduct," HPCSA chairman Jannie Hugo ruled, AFP news agency reports.

Basson's lawyers had argued that he should be acquitted because the charges were not related to a doctor-patient relationship, but in his capacity as a soldier in the SADF, reports South Africa's public broadcaster, SABC.

Secrets & Lies: Wouter Basson and South Africa’s Chemical and Biological Warfare Programme

This is a tale of military machination and scientific subterfuge, of combatants who disappeared without trace, and bizarre experiments carried out behind locked doors.

In waging ‘total war’ during the s and s, South African securocrats demanded a ‘total strategy’, including secret and unconventional means to fight the perceived ‘total onslaught’ against the apartheid regime.

Against that background, a group of scientists under military guidance crossed the threshold of an arcane realm, familiar to ordinary citizens only through the imaginations of fiction writers – a world marked by covert operations and germ warfare, high-stakes deals in the international arms bazaar, smoke and mirrors, plausible deniability. A world where intrigue and double-crossing are routine, where secret missions and sinister sub-plots are the milestones for life in the fast lane.

Set against the backdrop of the international Cold War and South Africa’s bloody passage to democracy, the events related in this book were uncovered during ten years of investigation and made public by the trial of Wouter Bas

'I was like a scientist working on a cure for Aids' says Wouter Basson

17 January - By TANYA FARBER

Apartheid's most notorious doctor, Wouter Basson, has compared his leading role in South Africa's chemical warfare programme - which earned him the title Dr Death in some quarters - to that of a scientist seeking an Aids cure. "I don't understand what the noise is all about. I had nothing to do with apartheid," Basson, 65, told the Sunday Times in an interview this week."I was a soldier doing a job and was helping South Africa with its defensive abilities. That is the same as developing an antibiotic or a new drug against Aids. I had to think of what the Russians or Cubans would use against us."Now a private cardiologist at Mediclinic Durbanville, Basson's days are mapped out like those of any other surgeon: a secretary jealously guards his diary, which is filled cover to cover with some days he spends hours in the operating theatre - made almost anonymous by his surgical mask but with his olive eyes peering out - and in the corridors of the hospital he is lauded as a highly skilled surgeon, a master of his _quotes_start If you want to attack me then you must also look to mor
