Giles Tremlett: “The International Brigades Were Not an Outfit of the Communist International—They Were Antifascists.”

Giles Tremlett, long-time correspondent in Madrid, is finishing a major new book on the 35, volunteers from all over the world who flocked to Spain to help defend the Second Spanish Republic against fascism.

As Giles Tremlett sits down for a cup of coffee on a sunny morning in Madrid in late June, he plunks a bound manuscript on the terrace table (“Just to prove that it exists,” he jokes): a major new history of the International Brigades who fought with the Loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. The heavy tome looks impressive, but Tremlett is not quite done. For one thing, his editor hasn’t read it yet. “For another, it’s about 40, words too long,” he says. Still, if all goes well, it’ll be published next summer.

“I want to help my readers understand what it would have been like to be there.”

Born in Plymouth, UK, in , Tremlett has lived in Madrid for more than twenty years. In addition to a long stint as correspondent for The Guardian and The Economist, he has written Ghosts of Spai

The Freelance History Writer Notes and Reviews

The Freelance History Writer has previously reviewed two other biographies of Isabella of Castile:  Here and Here.

I’ve had this volume on my shelf for some time and having recently decided to do some research on Isabella, finally read it. Tremlett’s opening page has two quotes about this formidable queen. ‘No woman in history has exceeded her achievement’ from Hugh Thomas, “Rivers of Gold: The Rise of the Spanish Empire” and ‘Probably the most important person in our history’ from Manuel Fernández Á lvarez, “Isabel la Católica”.

From the first page of this book, I was hooked. Tremlett gives us a well-organized and well-thought-out, chronological, presentation of Isabella’s life, from the reign of her father to her death. Isabella’s gutsy seizure of the throne after the death of her half-brother King Enrique IV had me on the edge of my seat. She quickly neutralized Enrique’s daughter Juana la Beltraneja to take power. It’s impossible to know if Juana was illegitimate or Enrique’s actual daughter but Tremlett makes a convincing case that she was legitimate.

Isabella’s first great political move was to marry Ferdinan

Giles Tremlett is an Englishman who has lived and worked as a journalist in Spain for many years. His first book, Ghosts of Spain: Travels through a Country's Hidden Past, gives a sense of the country's history and its many paradoxes, as experienced by Tremlett. He comments on the vast differences between Spanish and British traditions of childrearing —stating that Spanish children are treated as treasures, while British children have often been largely ignored by their parents—and notes that atypically, Spanish teenagers report being extremely happy with their families. Overall, the country seems to have a forward-looking attitude and to be prospering. Yet Tremlett's book also explore's Spain's dark

The International Brigades: Fascism, Freedom and the Spanish Civil War, by Giles Tremlett. pp. London: Bloomsbury. $

Consider the obstacles faced by the volunteers from around the world who rushed to help defend Madrid in the perilous autumn of , when Franco’s Nationalists almost captured the city. An order might come from brigade headquarters in German, be passed on in Serbo-Croatian, and be incomprehensible to an infantryman who spoke only French. Furthermore, that volunteer may have been issued unreliable ammunition for his rifle, from which he had the chance to fire only a few shots in hasty training, and then come under friendly fire from malfunctioning artillery shells that fell short. And all this when facing an army equipped with a flood of weaponry from Mussolini and Hitler. But the International Brigades troops fought on nonetheless.

They came from 65 countries all told, according to Giles Tremlett, the Guardian correspondent in Spain and author of this authoritative new study. He estimates that at least 20% gave their lives. The first members to leave for the front received their rif
