His full name was Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón. But everyone called him Quino, and to those closest to him, he was “Quinito.” The nickname was given to him when he was little, in his hometown of Mendoza, Argentina, in order to distinguish him from his uncle Joaquín. Quino liked to draw from an early age — his mother recalls that he was allowed to draw on the kitchen table, provided he cleaned up afterward.

Quino was born in Argentina in , his family made up of Spanish republicans. At the age of twenty, he moved to the metropolis Buenos Aires to take part in the capital’s bustling cultural life. At that time, the South American city was the center of a thriving comics scene, with its own magazines, schools, and traditions, and Quino quickly rose to the top thanks to hard work and talent.

Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, known worldwide by his pen name Quino, was born in Mendoza (Argentina) in Son of Andalusians who emigrated to Argentina in , he discovered his vocation thanks to his uncle Joaquín Tejón, a painter and graphic designer, and began studying Fine Arts in his hometown when he was 13 years old. He abandoned his studies in , determined to devote himself to comics and humour. He published his first page in and then went on to publish his cartoons, drawings and comic strips in newspapers and magazines in America and Europe. Following the military coup in Argentina, Quino was exiled in Milan. In , he adopted Spanish nationality and has also resided alternately among Madrid, Paris, Milan and Buenos Aires. 

Acknowledged as one of the leading cartoonists worldwide, Quino rose to fame with his Mafalda comic strips. This character was created for a failed advertising campaign, shortly after he published his first collection, Mundo Quino [The World of Quino] (). The first Mafalda comic strip was published on 29th September in the Argentine capital in the weekly magazine Primera Plana.

Hijo de españoles, lo apodaron Quino desde pequeño para diferenciarlo de su tío, un ilustrador y pintor también llamado Joaquín Tejón, gracias a quien el joven Quino conoció su vocación a la corta edad de 3 años.

Cuando Quino tenía 13 años, su madre muere, y 3 años después su falleció su padre.
Poco tiempo después, el artista, que por entonces estudiaba en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Mendoza, decide abandonar sus estudios para convertirse en autor de historietas.

Poco tiempo pasó hasta que logró publicar su primer trabajo, un anuncio de una tienda de sedas.
Quino por entonces se trasladó a Buenos Aires para buscar trabajo en editoriales, aunque sin éxito, por lo que tuvo que volver a su provincia natal.
Luego debió hacer el servicio militar obligatorio, y tras esto, ya en , decide instalarse definitivamente en la ciudad porteña, aunque los primeros tiempos los vivió en condiciones muy precarias.
