An inspiring South Africa story domestic worker to graduate
If it’s your first day back at work today after the Festive Season and you need cheering up, you’ll love the story of Ntombizodwa Mahlangu: with support and encouragement from her family, employer and colleagues, she made the transition despite being a single parent from domestic worker to graduate in under ten years.
That’s a huge achievement in South Africa where educational standards between the rich and poor vary vastly and as such, the gap between school and university for most is a chasm that’s simply too big to cross.
The photo in this post went viral across South Africa (and the global South African diaspora): Ntombizodwa was so surprised that she’d become such a beacon to those from similar backgrounds. I am so humbled and grateful for the support. When I shared that picture on Facebook I never thought that it would be so viral, she said. As much as my friends are motivated, so am I. Because of the messages from across the world I have realised that the journey has just began. There is more to come!”
What’s even more remarkable is that Ntombizodwa grew up in Mpumalanga, a beautiful
ZODWA MAHLANGU’S JOURNEY AFTER FALLING SHORT ON HER FIRST JOYOUS CELEBRATION AUDITION
Ntombizodwa Mahlangu, a proud native of Embalenhle, South Africa, embodies a life deeply rooted in music and faith. From her early days at Embalenhle Primary School to her musical education at Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), where she studied music, Ntombizodwa has been honing her musical talents from a young age. As a devoted mother of three boys and happily married to Mr. Malefane for a decade, she balances her roles as a family woman, servant of God, and a passionate musician.
Her musical journey began at the tender age of 3, encouraged and supported by her parents, especially her father who played a pivotal role in her early career endeavors. Inspired by legendary artists such as Brenda Fassie, Rebecca Malope, and Whitney Houston, Ntombizodwa found her voice early on, participating in her first competition at just 5 years old, marking the beginning of her musical odyssey.
Her sister recognized her talent and informed her about the Joyous Celebration auditions while she was studying music at TUT. During her
ET infected me with HIV, claims killer
Chris Mahlangu, the man convicted of murdering Eugene Terre Blanche, has accused the former AWB leader of infecting him with HIV.
Mahlangu, 30, also told the court that he did not plan to murder Terre Blanche, adding his "heart is feeling bad" now that he is dead .
As sentencing arguments began in the Mafikeng High Court, sitting in Ventersdorp yesterday, Mahlangu expressed disinterest in the length of sentence he might be given, saying he just wanted the money Terre Blanche owed him.
"All I want is my money. I didn't get paid," he said.
The right-wing leader was bludgeoned to death on the Easter weekend of , sparking fears of racial tension ahead of the soccer World Cup, hosted by South Africa.
Probation officer Johan Engel argued that year-old Patrick Ndlovu, who was acquitted of the murder but convicted of house-breaking, had "shown remorse" and should not be jailed.
Ndlovu has spent the past two years in a place of safety where, Engel said, he "learned from his mistakes and participated well in therapeutic programmes".
In mitigation of sentence for Mahlangu, clinical psychologist Henk
Remembering Sipho Gumede: 'When I was young he used to braid my hair' - Mantombi
Late jazz legend Sipho Gumede's endless love for his first child Mantombi inspired him to compose one of the biggest songs of his career.
Perhaps the success of the sweet sincere melody was because of the way we were enchanted by this Zulu man's ability to weave tenderness and warmth for his child into the song.
Many jazz lovers have said that Mantombi is the song that lets us see into the genius that is bass guitarist Sipho Gumede, and as a fledgling fan I am inclined to agree.
Today is the anniversary of his death. Sixteen years ago, he died suddenly from lung cancer, leaving behind his wife Fikiswa and his children Mantombi, 43, Sifiso, 29, Nozipho, 28, Nonthuthuzelo, 19, and Fikile,
Muse Mantombi remembers him as a present father who taught his children to love their African roots.
"He was very strict and set in his ways," says Mantombi. "He was a proud Zulu man and taught me the importance of connecting to my ancestors and putting family first." For most of her teenage years, Mantombi was raised single handedly by her father which strengthen
