Quinn first came to Vancouver as a member of the Canucks’ inaugural NHLteam in , playing two seasons as a hard rock defenseman and a popular leader on and off the ice. After retiring following a nine-year NHL career, he became a remarkably successful NHL coach and general manager guiding several NHL clubs including Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Toronto, and Edmonton. During his first full season with the Flyers, Quinn guided the team to a record game unbeaten streak and a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Quinn returned to the Cup Finals at the helm of the Canucks in , taking the team to within a goal post of defeating the Rangers in Game Seven. I never did meet Pat Quinn or get to him know personally, but as a Leafs fan growing up he meant a great deal to me.
I won’t talk about Quinn’s contributions as part of the Flyers, Kings, Canucks or Oilers. He did a lot of great things outside of Toronto, and so many fans will rightfully recognize him as a key part of their organization instead of this one, but I’ll always remember him as a Maple Leaf.
If you are in your mids or older, Pat Quinn might not represent the head of the best Leafs team you have ever seen, but he was certainly the last man in charge of success in Toronto. If you are younger than that, Quinn is essentially the only man you have seen guide the Leafs to considerable success. If you are too young to remember Quinn, I truly feel sorry for you.

When people talk about Pat Quinn, they speak of him as a good man and a good coach. However, they also remember Quinn the player, and the thing they remember most is the hit that knocked out Bobby Orr. Although he and Orr became friends later in life, neither of them ever forgot that hit. When a reporter asked him about the hit over 30 years later, he laughed and said, “It was all shoulder.
