James Lovelock
James Ephraim Lovelock (26 July in Letchworth, Hertfordshire - 26 July in Abbotsbury, Dorset) was an English physician, meteorologist, writer, inventor, atmospheric chemist and environmentalist., famous for the Gaia hypothesis, which envisions the Earth as a self-regulating system.
His invention, the electron capture detector, made it possible to detect toxic compounds in regions as remote as Antarctica.
Contrary to nuclear weapons, he promoted the peaceful use of nuclear energy as the only resource to reduce the abuse of fossil fuels and prevent the atmospheric system from reaching a point of no return that would destabilize it.
Biography
Lovelock was born in the garden city of Letchworth (Letchworth Garden City), Hertfordshire. She studied chemistry at the University of Manchester before taking up a medical research position with the Medical Research Council , London. She studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

James Ephraim Lovelock was born in Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire, England, but moved to London where he was, by his own account, an unhappy pupil at Strand School.[1] He studied chemistry at the University of Manchester, before taking up a Medical Research Council post at the Institute for Medical Research in London.[2] His student status enabled temporary deferment of military service during the Second World War, but he registered as a conscientious objector.[3] He later abandoned this position in the light of Nazi atrocities and tried to enlist for war service, but was told that his medical research was too valuable for this to be considered.
