Lowey won her very first bid for Congress, flipping New York’s 20th District and unseating the two-term Republican incumbent, Rep. Joe DioGuardi. After her early electoral splash, she remained a force to be reckoned with in the House, rising to become the first woman to chair the powerful House Appropriations Committee.
In the years leading up to her congressional career, Lowey was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College who worked in advertising before stepping aside to raise her children. Nita Lowey, a Jewish Democrat from New York who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 32 years, has died at
Lowey’s family announced her death on Sunday, four years after she retired from Congress. She had battled breast cancer for several years, the family’s announcement said.
“A public servant in the truest sense, she was guided by the Jewish core value of ‘Tikkun Olam,’ repairing the world,” said the announcement, which said Lowey died surrounded by family at her Harrison, New York, home.
Lowey was 51 in when she was elected to Congress to represent a suburban district encompassing parts of Westchester County as well as Rockland County, with a large Jewish population. She became the first woman to head the House Appropriations Committee. She was also a staunch advocate for Israel and battled against eroding bipartisan support for the country.
When Rep. Ilhan Omar, elected in as a member of the progressive “Squad,” suggested that supporters of Israel are loyal to a foreign country, Lowey condemned her statements.

"Nita has quietly and bravely battled metastatic breast cancer in recent years with the same tenacity and strength that she fought throughout her year career in Congress for women, children and families in the U.S. and around the world," her family said in a statement released over the weekend.
Lowey's political career began after she narrowly beat then Republican incumbent Joe DioGuardi in the election. She started her tenure as congresswoman for the people of Westchester and Rockland County the following year, and would continue to serve in Congress until her retirement in
