Kateryna Lagno is a two-time European women's champion (, ), the women's World rapid champion (), a two-time Word blitz champion (, ), a two-time winner of the World Chess Olympiads – in as part of the Ukrainian national team and in as a member of the Russian national team.
Despite not winning any of the legs in the previous edition of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix, she finished in the third position in the overall standings for the series, thanks to her regularity: she obtained 3rd place in Gibraltar, and 4th place in Skolkovo and Monaco. She qualified for the current edition by rating.
Lagno was born on December 27, , in Lviv, a major city in Western Ukraine. Kateryna started her chess career as a prodigal child: she learnt to play when she was two, and at seven, she became the Ukrainian champion among girls under 10 years. Youth Career
Born at the very end of the s in Lviv in what is now western Ukraine, Lagno came up through the chess ranks representing that country before moving to Russia in (While playing for Ukraine, her name was transliterated as Lahno instead of Lagno.)
A prodigy, Lagno found success quickly, winning the girls’ under world championship. By , she was a WGM, breaking GM Judit Polgar’s record for the youngest player ever to achieve that title.
Lagno’s other big win in a youth event came in , when she won the European championship for girls under A year later, she was already playing for Ukraine in the Chess Olympiad and competing for the women’s world championship.

Jugend-Karriere
Lagno wurde Ende der er Jahre in Lemberg (Lviv) in der heutigen Westukraine geboren und spielte sich als Vertreterin des Landes in der Schachwelt hoch, bevor sie nach Russland ging. (Als sie für die Ukraine spielte, wurde ihr Name als Lahno statt Lagno transliteriert).
Als Wunderkind hatte Lagno schnell Erfolg und gewann die Weltmeisterschaft der Mädchen unter 10 Jahren. Im Jahr wurde sie WGM und brach den Rekord von GM Judit Polgar als jüngste Spielerin, die diesen Titel je errungen hat.

In the interview Kateryna comes across as an intelligent, open and honest young lady. Holding her own under some tough questioning, she admits to the social exclusion that her talent has forced upon her, but at the same time remains resolutely determined in her fight to not only play in the men’s game, but to beat them at it as well, a battle she is winning with heartening regularity.
Despite her many achievements, Kateryna is not boastful, and dismisses the interviewers attempts to draw her out on the nature of celebrity with a succinct admonition – ‘My business is to play, to train’.
