All That You Leave Behind: A Memoir
Back in my journalism days, I used to be among the masses who loved David Carr's writing. A highly renowned New York Times journalist, his columns and tweets were legendary among fellow journos, and I remember being enthralled when the documentary "Page One" came out. When I heard about his daughter Erin Lee Carr's memoir about his life and their relationship, I was curious what further informaiton she could provide about his life, separate from the gargantuan media reputation that he had both before and after his untimely death.
Unfortunately, Carr's memoir falls flat of my expectations and wasn't able to hold my interest as I read along. The book is a chronicle of the relationship between David and Erin as they both struggled through addiction, careers and relationships with their families, but I found it devoid of compelling content and anything worth relating to. So, you want to make a movie. Where do you start? Start with developing an idea for a story you think you need to tell (don’t start with one on your family, that is for later in your career). Start researching. Has a doc been made on this already? What are the unique access points? What are the comps in the space?
Read read read. Read about filmmaking, directing, scripted, documentary, selling, editing, cinematography. Watch masterclasses or YouTube. Be a person who is always searching for more information about how to become a better creative/filmmaker.
If someone else is making a film on a subject, don’t try and crowd the field. Too many voices on one subject doesn’t signal boost, they drown each other out. On that same note, don’t sit on a good idea, because someone else will make it first.
Access. Access. Access. If you are trying to make your first doc the way to get in the door is to obtain access to something you have exclusively. Exclusivity is garnered through trust and working with a subject in a long term capacity. Try and get a draft of an exclusivity agreement through one of your doc pals. Exclusive archive sometimes works, but not always.

Erin Lee Carr is a documentary filmmaker known for her focus on criminal justice, femininity, and virality. Carr is the daughter of the late David Carr, a media columnist for The New York Times. Carr's early career included internships and assistant roles that broadened her experience in media and documentary production. Erin’s memoir All That You Leave Behind, a reflection on grief, technology, and moving forward without your greatest champion was released by Random House on April 9, Critics called the debut memoir incisive, dark and her story transformative.
