From email, texting and the internet, to mobile phones, PDAs, DVDs, search engines and MP3 files, our daily lives are filed with new tools, systems and networks which would have seemed inconceivable twenty years ago. These new technologies have transformed the way we lead our lives and designers, such as the Bouroullec brothers in France and Hella Jongerius and Jurgen Bey in the Netherlands, have responded by developing new types of furniture.

Conceived by the Berlin-based designer Jerszy Seymour () as a comfortable armchair-cum-chaise longue, the PlayStation Chair combines a soft, circular seat with an upholstered leg rest on which you can rest your legs while watching television, or position a Sony PlayStation console to play a video game. Like many of Seymour’s designs, the PlayStation Chair has a playful appearance that belies its underlying practicality. These qualities are reflected in his other designs: from the Muff Daddy denim beanbag seat with long arms that literally embrace the sitter, to the Freewheelin’ Franklin table mounted on the motor of a remote controlled model car.

In , four cowboys, Catherine Geel, Clémence Seilles, Stephane Barbier-Bouvet and Jerszy Seymour, wandering through the deserted plains of meaning, got together with a burning feeling that something needed to happen.
Feeling that the school as a rocket ship blasting through the galaxies was the right place, and appreciating the history of radical school projects from Steiner to Bauhaus, Black Mountain College to Global Tools, and the contemporaries of United Nations Plaza, Bruce High Quality Foundation and Mountain School of Art, they formed themselves as Nuclear Banana ‘a launch pad for things, people and ideas&#; and started to discuss.
Meanwhile in , the merger of three schools in Amsterdam came to form the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs. From to , the program was heavily influenced by the functionalist and socio-critical ideas, partly thanks to the role of the socialist architect Mart Stam, who has been the director of the program. In the name was changed to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In the Sandberg Instituut was founded as the masters program of the Rietveld Academy.

Jerszy Seymour's studio is in the Mitte district of Berlin. It is a spacious, bright loft in a rear courtyard. His designs are scattered throughout it, there is a very prominent board with colorful splodges, there are lava-shaped luminaires suspended from the ceiling and several chairs in various stages of design stand around the desks. Right at the front, for example, there is a model of a plastic chair with an integrated mechanism. An initial glance at the studio indicates that a lot of conceptual work goes into Seymour's projects. He condenses his thoughts in metaphors, playing with their levels of meaning, while at the same time attempting to make them accessible. Seymour, for example uses the terms "amateur", "workshop" and "volcano" in new and unfamiliar contexts. When he talks of "amateurs", he is thinking not so much in terms of a lack of professionalism, but rather of the Latin word "amator", which means "lover, friend". According to Seymour there are no set structures, processes, or dogmas for an amateur, nothing is clarified, everything is in constant motion, as he explains in his lecture "A new world adventurer's guide / Survival, Adventure, Creation and Being" in th
