Nato il 10 gennaio a Masnago, un rione della città di Varese, Flaminio Bertoni emigra in Francia all’inizio degli anni Appassionato di pittura e scultura - attività cui si dedica parallelamente a quella di stilista di automobili -, entra in Citroën nel , in un periodo cruciale per la Casa francese.
A Parigi, infatti, gli affari del "Double Chevron" non vanno affatto bene e il patron André capisce subito che solo una mossa ardita potrà risollevare le sorti dell'azienda. Pensa così a un’automobile rivoluzionaria e ingaggia André Lefèbvre, un progettista che ha da tempo un chiodo fisso: spostare il peso del veicolo in avanti. Allo stile della nuova vettura (la Traction Avant, che debutta nel e deve il suo nome alla trazione anteriore) lavora proprio Bertoni che, partendo da una maquette di plastilina, dà forma a un’elegante carrozzeria, bassa e aerodinamica, con le portiere a libro incernierate
