Robert Marion La Follette was one of the few giants in the history of the United States senate, ranking with henry clay and daniel webster. Born in a Wisconsin log cabin, he was graduated from his state's university in Madison, began his legal practice there, and spent three undistinguished terms (–) in Congress. During the farmer-labor unrest of the s, La Follette grew considerably more liberal, and in he entered the governor's mansion with a reform program later called the "Wisconsin idea." It became the basis of the Progressive movement. La Follette, always a Republican, advocated the direct primary election as a method of nominating candidates, minimum wage and maximum hours laws, trade unionism, the popular referendum, strict regulation of the rates and services of railroads and public utilities by government commissions of experts, and radical tax reforms. His success as governor led to his election in as a United States senator.

Robert M. La Follette served in the United States Senate for nearly twenty years, and was a key figure in the Progressive Era (the period of the Industrial Revolution that spanned roughly from the s to about , in which reformers worked together in the interest of distributing political power and wealth more equally). Before heading to Washington, La Follette spent five years as governor of his home state, Wisconsin. In both offices he championed some of the first laws in the country that placed government regulations on business and supported others that were aimed at helping average wage earners and farmers. La Follette was a well-known figure in his time and enjoyed immense popular support. When he ran for president as a third-party candidate in , he won an impressive five million votes. That year he was the front-runner of the Progressive Party, which he had founded.

Credited with beginning the work of Wisconsins progressive movement, ROBERT M. LA FOLLETTE, SR. was born in Primrose, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, where he attended one term of law school before entering the law office of R. M. Bashford in Madison. He was elected District Attorney of Dane County in , and in he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives that he held until the Democratic landslide of Elected to three terms as governor beginning in , one of his key accomplishments was the Wisconsin Idea, which involved used expert help from the state university to prepare legislation and administer regulatory agencies. In , a Wisconsin seat in the U.S. Senate fell vacant, and LaFollette resigned the governorship and was elected by the state legislature to fill the vacancy, serving in the Senate for the next two decades. A serious contender for the Republican presidential nomination in , he remained overshadowed by Theodore Roosevelt. He provoked a storm of controversy in Wisconsin with his opposition to World War I.
