Jack Markell was sworn in as Delaware’s governor on January 19, , and was sworn in for his second term on January 15, He focused on economic development, education and workforce training as top priorities. Markell also focused on running state government efficiently and effectively, keeping the state’s AAA bond rating while reforming Delaware’s health and pension systems to make them more sustainable over time.
Beginning his career in the private sector, Markell helped lead the wireless technology revolution as the 13th employee at Nextel, where he served as senior vice president for corporate development. His other business experience includes a senior management position at Comcast Corporation, work as a consultant with McKinsey and Company and as a banker at First Chicago Corporation.
He was elected state treasurer in , winning three consecutive terms, including his last re-election in November of As treasurer, Markell worked to improve the lives of Delawareans through innovative programs aimed at cutting spending and improving fiscal responsibility. The Muslims of Delaware have a lot of affection and respect for former Gov. Jack Markell. To show their appreciation for his two terms as governor, they are organizing a felicitation event at the Islamic Society of Delaware on March 18, He is being recognized for his outreach to minorities of color and faith, for his pluralistic and inclusive approach to governance and his penchant to speak up for Muslims when they needed it most.
In the current age of Islamophobia, to understand how the positive outreach of politicians to Muslims is a significant departure from the norm, one must merely consider these politicians and their rhetoric.
President Trump during his campaign repeatedly promised a comprehensive Muslim ban, scapegoating Muslims in the process and one consequence of this rhetorical targeting was the steep rise in hate crimes against Muslims in recent months. Jack A. Markell (b. November 26, , in Newark, DE) served as the 73rd Governor of Delaware. On May 12, , President Joe Biden (D) appointed Markell to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Italy and San Marino.[1]
Markell was first elected governor on November 4, , defeating Republican William Swain Lee.[2] He took office January 20, , becoming the state's first Jewish governor. Markell won re-election in against three challengers, including Jeff Cragg (R).[3][4] He was not eligible to seek a third term in the office in the election cycle because state law restricts governors to a lifetime limit of two terms.
As governor, Markell helped shape and adopt new statewide policies regarding pension reform, school safety, campaign finance reporting, and disability services.
