Pal Bari (প&#;ল ব&#;ড়&#;) is one of the renowned historical places in Munshiganj. According to the current inhabitants of the Pal House at Abdullahpur, Kamini Pal and Dwarkanath Pal, the eldest two sons of Tokani Prasad Pal, possibly one of the richest business persons of Bikrampur, established this house around the end of the 19th century. They added a few more blocks to the house over the years, but lived within the compounds of their father&#;s house, several miles away. During the liberation war, many of their family members were brutally tortured and killed, prompting the entire clan to leave for Kolkata,India. A few years later Dwarkanath returned, to wind up his businesses here. Dwarkanath Pal, therefore chose to spend his last few years at this house. He decided to stay back in Munshiganj, but could not live in his own house. Many others had occupied most of that property.
Museum at Girish Chandra Sen's home opens in April
A museum has been set up at the residence of "Bhai" Girish Chandra Sen, the first person to translate Qur'an in Bangla, in Narsinghdi sadar upazila to showcase his literary works and various items the scholar used in his daily life. The renovators, Oitijhya Onneshwan, have been working tirelessly since February 2 last year to restore the original appearance of the two-storey building in Panchdona village. His bust and a plaque describing his life and work will be placed in front of the museum. The restoration work of Girish Chandra Sen museum is almost complete and the team hopes to open its doors for visitors within this month. Girish Chandra (), born in Panchdona village, was a religious scholar, translator and journalist. He wrote and published 42 books in Bangla, according to works, particularly translations of Prophet Muhammad's sayings and writing biographies of Muslim personalities, earned the respect of the Muslims who called him 'Bhai' Girish Chandra. Girish Chandra Sen () religious scholar and translator, who made the first creditable and full translation of the Holy Quran into Bangla, was born in the village of Panchdona in Narayanganj. He studied Persian and Sanskrit and began working as a copyist at the court of the Deputy Magistrate in Mymensingh. He taught for a short while at Mymensingh Zilla School before engaging wholeheartedly in journalism and literary activities.
Initially Girish Chandra worked at the Dhaka Prakash and later as Assistant Editor at the Sulobh Somachar and Babgabandhu, and as editor of the monthly Mahila. In , he became a Brahma under the influence of Keshab Chandra Sen and Bijoy Krishna Goswami and travelled through India and Burma to propagate his new faith. Encouraged and inspired by Keshab Chandra Sen, he went to Lucknow in to study Arabic and Islamic literature. The outcome, a Bangla translation of the Quran (), was his greatest achievement. His keen interest in different religions and liberal outlook earned him the respect of followers of other religions.
