Boyle says she enjoys reading and re-reading scripts forensically: “It’s a living document and on virtually all films there are regular rewrites all the way through.” As for inspiration, “It can take the form of looking at actual garments and fabric, whether old or new, books, newspapers, paintings, prints, photographs, video footage – whether archive or contemporary – and of course online resources.” This attention to detail may account for some of her beautiful costumes being in the exhibition, “Hollywood Costume”, which opened in the V&A in London in , and has since toured to Australia and several museums in the US – its final destination the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences in Los Angeles.
Boyle admits she prefers period costumes though says that “contemporary costume design is sometimes deceptively more difficult and equally challenging. Consolata Boyle
Consolata Boyle is an Oscar nominated costume designer and producer who was born in Dublin. She is married to documentary filmmaker Donald Taylor Black and is known for her work in films such as The Queen, The Iron Lady, Angela’s Ashes and Philomena.
Consolata established herself early on in her career working on big Irish movies like December Bride, Into the West, The Snapper, The Van and Mary Reilly. Her stellar work continued into the ’s with the period drama Angela’s Ashes and she won a Primetime Emmy Award in for The Lion in Winter - but it was ’s The Queen that propelled her into the international spotlight. For her work on the film, Consolata was nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA and won the IFTA for Best Costume Design.
Since , Consolata has been nominated for another Primetime Emmy Award for her work in the television movie Into The Storm, directed by Thaddeus O Sullivan and has won IFTA’s in for Cheri, in for The Iron Lady and in for Philomena. Consolata Boyle trained as a designer (for both set and costumes) at the Abbey Theatre, after graduating from UCD, where she studied Archaeology, History, and English. Her work was seen at all major theatres in Ireland as well as in London, at the Edinburgh International Festival, and on Broadway, before she began to concentrate on designing costumes for film and television.
She has received Oscar nominations for Victoria & Abdul, Florence Foster Jenkins and The Queen, and two Primetime Emmy nominations, winning for The Lion in Winter. Consolata has won a Costume Designers Guild Award (plus three nominations), two BAFTA Film nominations, and multiple IFTAs.
She has been conferred with an honorary postgraduate degree by the University for the Creative Arts, an Honorary Fellowship by the Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dún Laoghaire, home of The National Film School, a Volta Award for career achievement from the Dublin International Film Festival, and the Craft Award by Women in Film and Television UK.
