The missionaries saw the Treaty of Waitangi and British Government intervention as the least worst of possible solutions to relationships between Maori and growing numbers of unrestrained settlers. Civil order, the New Zealand Company’s dubious land ventures, speculators from New South Wales, the presence of French missionaries and naval vessels – there were a number of troubling signs. Better, then, to throw in their lot with the British Government and the Queen, in whom they could place some trust, and with whom, in a constitutional sense, there was some familiarity. Here lay the possibility of Maori interests being protected. Or so they thought.

In a preamble to , in January Henry Williams wrote to the Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, Dandeson Coates, expressing his concern at the tide of European immigration and the potential swamping of Maori. His solution was to have the British Government “take charge of the Country”, appoint a Governor, and create a general assembly of Chiefs, with the protection of a military force that would give weight to any laws that might be established. Healer, prophet, agent of change

Throughout history, certain individuals with a passion for justice and a rare gift of insight have been able to motivate people through periods of great social change, often defying all odds and being greatly misunderstood in the process.

Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana was such a man. After a profound vision on 8 November , he was instructed by the Wairua Tapu (Holy Spirit) to liberate the Maori tribes from their old fears and superstitions.

An extraordinary gift of healing; praying in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit with help from the Holy and Faithful Angels, saw thousands restored from physical, mental and spiritual ailments.

Ratana visited every marae around the country, lifting ancient curses and challenging the people to unite under Ihoa o nga Mano (Jehovah of the Multitudes). He affirmed individual responsibility and a healthy spiritual and economic destiny for Maori, working together with other New Zealanders, for the future greatness of the country.

He gathered 40, signatures on a petition asking the Government and the Crown to restore the Treaty of Wai

"Spiritual, Physical, and Political Healing for the Maori People"

Tahupotiki Wiremu (Bill) Ratana was born January 25, in the district of Rangitikei. Ratana was raised by his foster mother Ria Te Ra I Kokiritia Ai Hamuera and was baptised into the Methodist Church. His aunt, Mere Rikiriki, ran the "Holy Ghost Mission" and had a reputation for faith healing. There was also a strong prophetic tradition within the Maori culture. In a local Christian leader, Te Potangaroa, prophesied that a church would be raised up that would be just for the Maori people. People recognized as having a prophetic gift were called "the mouthpice of God" by the Maori. Ratana's aunt prophesied several times that Ratana would receive a sign from God and become a Maori spiritual leader. Ratana struggled in his early life with "hearing voices" which some people thought was mental illness and others the hand of God. He only attended school for a short time, reaching the fourth standard (grade). He left school and went to a family farm where he led a rather wild life. He soon began drinking and eventually became an alc
