I met Thomas on Facebook, and I saw a few works by him in the Watercolor Magazine. Short time ago I realized that I would like to know more about the artist but the net gave me too poor information. Then I asked my qquestions directly to Thomas.
When you started painting with watercolor? Did you ever try some other medium?
In University, I studied painting in oil, acrylic, as well as various methods of printmaking. But it was in architecture school that I first became drawn to the watercolor medium. I studied in the traditional Beaux-Arts methods of precise pencil line drawing with the application of layered washes of transparent watercolor. These techniques have always resonated with me; and while much adapted and evolved over the years, have formed the basis for all my watercolor artwork since.

Thomas Wells Schaller: The Language of Painting
How did your creative journey begin?
Like many I expect, my exploration of the visual arts began when I was a child. Introverted and quiet, I found it easiest to express myself by drawing. If I was nervous, afraid, or unhappy, I would take to my sketchbook and draw. And when I was exited and happy, I would do the same.
Around this time, my grandmother gave me a book from her shelf that featured American artists whose work was displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. I was transfixed. I loved the images of the paintings of course, but I was more taken by the idea of the lives these artists must live. And so I decided - at age 7 - that was the life for me. One day soon after, I marched into the kitchen of our rural Ohio farmhouse and announced to my stunned parents, “When I grow up, I am going to be an artist and live in New York City.” Disliking much of anything “urban”, they were both horrified and amused.
But all these years later, little has changed. Amazingly, I was able to fulfill my childhood dream. And the non-verbal language of painting and drawing remains the best way for me to find some order
Thomas W Schaller
Growing up in rural Ohio, as a kid Thomas Schaller dreamed of little else except to one day grow up, live in the city, and become a professional artist. And after a few twists and turns, years later, his dreams have actually come true. As a very young person, Thomas had many interests art and architecture being the primary ones. But he says he made the mistake of assuming that I had to choose one path or the other. He lived in New York City for many years working as a concept designer and architectural artist. While I loved this work, there was always something missing. I painted the dreams and visions of others, but I still longed to paint my own. So in , he made the decision to redesign his life and learn how to become the artist he was meant to be.
I love watercolor for many reasons, but primarily because of its unique capacity to be at the same time poetic and literal, gentle and strong, quiet and loud. Images in a watercolor seamlessly morph into something else new and unexpected. It can be both very specific and completely ephemeral. And so I have come to better understand my lifelong love of the built environment. Cities speak less
