Baba Sali - Biography

Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira , known as the Baba Sali (, lit. "Praying Father") (–) was a leading Moroccan Sephardic rabbi and kabbalist who was renowned for his alleged ability to work miracles through his prayers. He was one of the leaders of the Aliyah of Moroccan Jewry to Israel, which saw the transfer of nearly the entire population of that community to the Holy Land. His burial place in Netivot, Israel has become a shrine for prayers and petitioners.

Early life

Rabbi Yisrael was the scion of a distinguished family of Sephardic Torah scholars and tzadikkim who were also known as baalei mofet (miracle workers). He is the grandson of Rabbi Yaakov Abu Hasira. The patriarch of this family was Rabbi Shmuel Abuhatzeira. Born in the land of Israel, Rabbi Shmuel lived in Damascus for a while, where he studied Torah together with Rabbi Chaim Vital. In Shem Hagedolim, the Chida described Rabbi Shmuel as "an ish Elokim kadosh (a holy man of God). Wise people speak of his might and wonders in saving the Jewish community from many difficulties."

Rabbi Shmuel and his family eventually moved to the city of Tafilalt, Morocco, where Rabbi Shmuel's son Ma

Rabbi Yisrael Abuchatzeirah - The Baba Sali

Born: Tafillalt, Morocco,

Died: 4 Shevat, Israel,

Rabbi Yisrael Abuchatzeirah was of a well-known rabbinical dynasty. His grandfather was the famous tzaddik, Rabbi Yaakov Abuchatzeirah. He had great skill in Talmudic interpretation and many of his halachic decisions were accepted and took root among his followers. He was regarded as someone who possessed the Ruach Hakodesh or "Divine Spirit".

Although still very young, people flocked to R' Yisrael for blessings for their parnassa (income), family, and health. Consequently he became known as "Baba Sali," (our praying father) because of the prayers that he would invoke on behalf of those who sought out his guidance.

One day, young Yisrael's father told him, "My child, you have a great power to bless people which you cannot measure. Your words can bring great help to men. From now on, you must use this power to say good things about others and to bless them."

Young Yisrael gave his word. Soon it became known that the blessings of this young child brought miraculous results. He became famous as Baba Sali. A master of the Kabbalah and a great Torah Sage, he took over his

What was the secret of Baba Sali's miracles?

By MARK FISHUpdated: JANUARY 15,

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the death of the Baba Sali, may his merit protect us. Thousands visited his grave which is located in the city of Netivot in the south.

Along with his outstanding greatness in Torah knowledge, the Baba Sali was known for the thousands of miracles he performed. Inspiring and amazing testimonies abound about his wonders and supernatural salvations.

On the Baba Sali’s death anniversary, an event was held in Morocco in his memory, led by his great-grandson Rabbi Yoel Pinto, the son and successor of Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto.

For over two hours, Rabbi Yoel Pinto explained the significance of the Baba Sali's miracles, and their divine message that is relevant to each and every one of us.

Rabbi Yoel Pinto suggested that the Holy One brought miracles through the Baba Sali to counter the technological progress that flourished during his lifetime. This helped people connect with the supernatural and God’s existence, and not be carried away into thinking that the physical world functions by rote or by nature without God’s intervention.
