He has been called &#;the only private citizen with his own foreign policy,&#; and there is no doubt that George Soros plays a unique and unprecedented role: a billionaire social activist pursuing his own specific ideas for transforming the world into a more progressive and democratic society. Directing the flow of billions of dollars through his Open Society Foundations to causes from promoting climate change research to ensuring the survival of the European Union, Soros has emerged as a public intellectual and a political force politicians and business leaders can&#;t afford to ignore.

In Buying a Better World, Anna Porter gives a critical examination of the new world of billionaire philanthropy on the international stage. Chronicling the growth of the Soros behemoth from its beginnings as a simple tax loophole, Porter takes up the causes Soros has championed over the past three decades and the activists who hold some of the most powerful positions in his network.

Buying a Better World: George Soros and Billionaire Philanthropy

The incredible, inside story of the man and the organization changing the way we change the world.

George Soros is well known as the legendary speculator who made a fortune betting against the British pound in , but he is also a philanthropist who has spent billions in order to promote democracy around the world. Morton Abramowitz of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace once said that Soros was “the only private citizen with his own foreign policy.”

Anna Porter has interviewed Soros, his senior staff, journalists, politicians, and many others in an attempt to understand the man. Each person has a unique story to tell. Focusing on the last decade, she explores how Soros’s Open Society Foundations have spread his ideas of human rights, democracy, Western liberalism, and participatory capitalism around the globe. These are the ideas Soros has said he considers worth dying for. How have they translated into reality? What will his legacy be?

Buying a Better World: George Soros and Billionaire Philanthropy

Did Soros buy a better world?

For me, it's a mixed bag. György Soros is a hedge fund manager turned philantropist, turned public intellectual. This book focuses on the second phase, his foundations, NGOs and political contributions.

The book is comprised of 19 chapters, detailing his work throughout the globe, focusing on the late 90s, to the mid s, when this book was written. It is well researched, showcasing Soros' efforts to finance causes he sympathises with. The author makes a concious effort to present both the positive and negative outcomes of these philantropic efforts, but you can clearly sense some left wing biase.

I was thinking about rating this book either a 3 or a 4, but I would like to make a conscious effort to rate the literature and not my opinions about the topic.

What this book taught me is that philantropy can go a long a way, and by making a conscious effort to give back to causes we support either via time or many can go a long way. Even if most of us don't have billions.
