Calestous Juma ()
Calestous Juma was a Kenyan scientist and university scholar who primarily focused on sustainable development. He served as a Professor of the Practice of International Development and Director of the Science, Technology, and Globalization Project at the Harvard Kennedy School. Juma also served as the director for the Agricultural Innovation in Africa Project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was born in Busia village on June 9, to John Kwada Juma and Clementina Nabwire and grew up in Port Victoria, Kenya. Juma attended Port Victoria Secondary School and later Egoji Teachers Training College in Kenya in After his certification, Juma taught science in Mombasa, Kenya, and wrote for the Daily Nation newspaper. In , he became the first full-time environment and science correspondent for the newspaper.

Professor Calestous Juma was an internationally-recognized authority and leader in the application of science, technology, and innovation to sustainable development. His original work focused on analyzing the co-evolution of technological innovation and institutional change in socio-economic systems. He directed programs that advanced science, technology, and innovation policy research (especially biotechnology), provided high-level science and technology advice, and promoted the conservation of biological diversity.
He was Professor of the Practice of International Development at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) and Faculty Chair of the Edward S. Mason Fellows Program. He was also Faculty Chair of the Innovation for Economic Development Executive Program and Director of the Science, Technology, and Globalization Project. Prof. Juma directed the School’s Agricultural Innovation in Africa and Health Innovation Policy in Africa projects funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. On their way to church on Sundays, the residents of Port Victoria, Kenya, would pass by young Calestous Juma’s house and drop off things that were broken — radios, record players, appliances. The year-old had special dispensation from his priest to stay home and fix them. He was, the priest contended, “doing God’s work.”
The scale of the broken things that Juma tried to fix grew considerably over the years, to range from agricultural to technological education in Africa to acceptance of new technology — as did the community of people who depended on his intellect and energy. This week, the global community mourned the passing of the leading voice among interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners working to harness science, technology, and policy in the service of sustainable well-being.
