The "Zodiac" the one that got away

In the late s, a serial killer operated in Northern California for 10 months, sending a series of confessional letters to police and the press until These letters were signed ‘Zodiac’ and also included symbols and four intriguing ciphers (codes), three of which have never been solved.

Whilst the Zodiac letters eventually claimed responsibility for a total of 37 murders, police investigators generally accepted only seven Zodiac victims, two of whom survived. Following investigation, police added a further five crimes, between and to the suspected Zodiac victims list. Over 2, potential suspects were investigated and a few stood out, but forensic technology of the time was not yet advanced enough to accuse them conclusively. The case of the Zodiac Killer was never solved and remains open.

For over 35 years, the morbid fascination over the unsolved Zodiac killings have inspired a whole host of films, books, television shows and first of the films

In dem Text nahm der Zodiac-Killer Bezug auf den Anruf einer Person in einer live ausgestrahlten Fernsehshow. Der Anrufer behauptete damals, der Zodiac-Killer zu sein, und sagte, er wolle nicht in der Gaskammer enden. Als Oranchak die betreffenden Zeilen las, »da wusste ich – oh mein Gott, das ist es«, sagte er.

Many theories have emerged since the purported Zodiac Killer’s series of brutal killings terrorized California’s Bay Area in the late s, leaving a wake of terror behind. The person claiming to be the perpetrator taunted the area by sending cryptic letters to Bay Area reporters, such as the San Francisco Chronicle, for publication.

Although the author claimed responsibility for 37 victims, investigators have only confirmed five.
