Year-Old Nirrimi Hakanson&#;s Career In Fashion Photography Is Impressive
The first word that comes to mind when considering Nirrimi’s career in fashion photography is “impressive.” At 18 years old, Nirrimi has already been signed to work on campaigns for brands such as DIESEL and Billabong. A prodigious photographer from Queensland, Nirrimi’s work belies her age and her photography is well beyond her years. Here, Nirrimi recounts how she first fell in love with photography, what influences her style and what’s next for this self proclaimed ‘gypsy with a camera’.
Daniel: Nirrimi, thanks for your time. I&#;m a big fan of photography and was stunned by your portfolio, and by how young you are! You are “newly 18? right? I must ask, although you are young and new to the industry – has fashion photography changed since you first joined it?
Nirrimi: Luckily I see the industry and fashion photography embracing more of what is real. I hope it keeps steering toward the natural, and I hope I have a positive effect on that.
Daniel: Tell us about yourself, where are you from where did all of this begin for you?
Nirrimi: I’m from a little town close to the sun where I grew up

i was thirteen when my obsession for documenting beauty began. in the beginning it was my wild, six-year-old sister in our backyard, the hot summer sun freckling her skin. then it was strangers in the streets, my unassuming youth allowing me to photograph the most honest of moments.
very soon i was filled with angsty teenage passion. drunkenly stumbling suburban streets with a camera in hand and friends mostly chosen for how well they photographed. the camera was a part of myself and i slept with it beside my pillow every night for years.
i obsessively documented life so much that when i reminisce now it is more a collection of images, films and diary entries than true memories.

I’m a 25 year old photographer, writer, blogger and mama from Australia.
What inspired you to get into photography/writing?
I’ve always been a creative, writing came first as a child and then I picked up a camera as a teen and fell in love.
What do you love about your job?
My office can be my bedroom, my favourite cafe or a beach in Indonesia. It’s challenging and exciting. I’m heard.
What qualities do you think make a great photographer/writer?
Rolling with the punches. Presentness. Self discipline.
What are the biggest challenges in your job?
Being my own boss. Getting enough work to get by.
