Madhava of sangamagrama biography for kids

In the 14th century, a remarkable mathematician and astronomer named Madhava lived in the town of Sangamagrama, a part of the Kozhikode (Calicut) kingdom in what is now Kerala, India. This period, known as the Sangam era, was a time of great cultural and intellectual flourishing in South India. Sangamagrama (Now Irinjalakuda), situated along the banks of the river Nila (also known as Bharathappuzha), was a hub of learning and scholarship, particularly in the fields of mathematics and astronomy.

Madhava&#;s Early Life and Education

Madhava was born into a family of learned men, and it is believed that his father was also a mathematician who introduced him to the world of numbers and calculations at a young age. As Madhava grew older, he likely studied under the guidance of experienced mathematicians and astronomers in Sangamagrama, learning the intricacies of the subjects that would later define his life&#;s work.

In those days, knowledge was often passed down orally from teacher to student, with scholars engaging in rigorous debates and discussions to refine their ideas and theories. Madhava would have spent years mastering the existing knowledge in mathematics and astronomy,

Madhava of Sangamagrama

Madhava of Sangamagrama was born near Cochin on the coast in the Kerala state in southwestern India. It is only due to research into Keralese mathematics over the last twenty-five years that the remarkable contributions of Madhava have come to light. In [10] Rajagopal and Rangachari put his achievement into context when they write:-
[Madhava] took the decisive step onwards from the finite procedures of ancient mathematics to treat their limit-passage to infinity, which is the kernel of modern classical analysis.
All the mathematical writings of Madhava have been lost, although some of his texts on astronomy have survived. However his brilliant work in mathematics has been largely discovered by the reports of other Keralese mathematicians such as Nilakantha who lived about years later.

Madhava discovered the series equivalent to the Maclaurin expansions of sin x, cos x, and arctanx around , which is over two hundred years before they were rediscovered in Europe. Details appear in a number of works written by his followers such as Mahajyanayana prakara which means Method of computing the great sines. In fact this work had been claimed by some his
Indian mathematician and astronomer ()

Mādhava of Sangamagrāma (Mādhavan) (c. – c. ) was an Indian mathematician and astronomer who is considered to be the founder of the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics in the Late Middle Ages. Madhava made pioneering contributions to the study of infinite series, calculus, trigonometry, geometry and algebra. He was the first to use infinite series approximations for a range of trigonometric functions, which has been called the "decisive step onward from the finite procedures of ancient mathematics to treat their limit-p*age to infinity".

Biography

Little is known about Madhava's life with certainty. However, from scattered references to Madhava found in diverse m*cripts, historians of Kerala school have pieced together information about the mathematician. In a m*cript preserved in the Oriental Ins*ute, Baroda, Madhava has been referred to as Mādhavan vēṇvārōhādīnām karttā Mādhavan Ilaññippaḷḷi Emprān. It has been noted that the epithet 'Emprān' refers to the Emprāntiri community, to which Madhava might have belonged.
