One of surfing’s high performance pioneers, Larry Bertlemann became one of the sport’s biggest influences. Born on the Big Island of Hawaii in , he moved to Oahu at age 11 and surfed at Queens off Waikiki. One day he broke his 96 and tried glassing the fin to the front half of the board but had trouble getting it to stay. A guy walked up to show him how to do it properly and that guy turned to be Donald Takayama. From that very day he mindset changed on what types of surfboards could be ridden (longboards were the norm in the 60’s) and he would also work with Ben Aipa who began shaping shorter, wider, and faster twin fins, swallow tails, and stinger designs.
The new shorter designs allowed Bertlemann to surf faster and begin experimenting with radical maneuvers and would change surfing forever. Larry became one of the most popular and highest paid surfers during the ’s signing endorsement deals with soft drink and airline companies.
Larry first shaped his surfboard when he was 19 and has been most influenced by Ben Aipa. He firmly believes in hand shaping all of his boards and feels that there will always be a market for the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into a ha

Larry Bertlemann changed the game. The man can be credited with showing the world what was possible on a surfboard. One of the original shortboard pioneers, Bertlemann’s style was a radical antithesis of the soulful carving of the 60s and early 70s. He had a distinct, dynamic spring in his surfing, which earned him the nickname “Rubberman.” While the style at the time valued arcing carves, Bertlemann was one of the first to attack waves top to bottom with sharp turns in the pocket.
Larry Bertlemann was born August 7th, in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. The son of a former Air Force survival instructor and auto mechanic, his upbringing was similar to many kids from Hawaii. While he didnt begin surfing until he was almost a teenager, hunting pigs and fishing were major pastimes. After a move to Oahu with his mother at age 11, a young Larry picked up a surfboard
Larry Bertlemann expected to spend a low-key weekend signing autographs and promoting his surfboards at a shop in Redondo Beach.
Instead, the former competitive surfer ended his trip last month with a call to the police and a hospital visit.
And nearly a month later, Bertlemann said he is still dealing with some effects – including a black-and-blue eye and some numbness in his face – from an altercation with a man he’d known only briefly while visiting the South Bay.
“I’m doing fine, actually,” said Bertlemann, 55, who has received wide recognition for his maneuvers on the shortboard. “(But) I came out at the bottom end of it.”
And while last week Bertlemann likened his injuries to “getting hit by a surfboard,” they were serious enough to land him in the hospital, and for police to arrest his alleged attacker.
After receiving a call late Feb. 21 from Bertlemann, Redondo Beach police arrested year-old Pasha John Fazeli on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, Sgt. Shawn Freeman said.
Fazeli, of Redondo Beach, was released from the city jail Feb. 22 on a $30, bond. Attempts to reach him last we
