The young Mulligan grew up at a time when agitation over Britain's taxation of the American colonies was rising; born in Ireland, he moved to the colonies at the age of six, and considered himself not merely a colonist, but a patriot of the impending nation. Able with dialogue and persuasion, it was Mulligan who convinced the young Alexander Hamilton to join the patriotic movement for independence.
During the War of Independence, Mulligan continued to work as a tailor in New York. Such work was ideal for knowledge gathering; many of the British officers would attend his shop, and from the dates they wished to collect their new or updated uniforms, Mulligan was able to pass along information about the deployment of certain regiments. A fortunate visit late one night by a British officer demanding service yielded vital knowledge of a daring plot to ambush and capture George Washington: by informing the revolutionary leader ahead of time, General Washington's capture was averted.

He was the hero of the hour, feted the night before at Fraunces Tavern by Governor Clinton of New York and many other leading figures. He was the magnificent leader of a brand new nation that, even then, looked likely to be the most powerful on earth.
He had just held a farewell morning parade in Bowling Green. The British ships had sailed for home after seven years of occupying New York; their grasp on world domination shattered for all time. Their ignominious defeat at the Battle of Yorktown in dealt a fatal blow to their empire-building and willingness to fight.

When you are a spy, you want to go unnoticed. With a colorful name like Hercules Mulligan, that can sometimes be difficult, especially if you are also a prominent businessman in British-occupied Manhattan during the American Revolution. Recent popular history has focused heavily on the Culper Ring, but Mulligan was not one of the Culpers. His star turn in recent popular history comes not from the Culper vehicle Turn,but from his inclusion as a character in the hit Broadway musical Hamilton.
The play has brought Mulligan’s name and legend into the spotlight in recent years. Hamilton is a Hip-Hop take on the life of Alexander Hamilton masterfully told by Lin-Manuel Miranda, based on the book of the same title by Ron Chernow. Hamilton is ostensibly non-fiction, though “artistic license” is exercised in places. On the other hand, the life of the real Hercules Mulligan sounds as if it could be fictional.
