एमजी रामचंद्रन ने हमेशा तमिलनाडू में गरीबों, जरूरतमंदों और वंचित लोगों की भलाई का काम किया। मुख्यमंत्री रहते हुए एमजीआर ने ‘‘पोषण मध्यान्ह भोजन योजना‘‘ शुरू की, जिसके तहत तमिलनाडू के सरकारी संस्थानों में आने वाले सभी बच्चों को लाभान्वित किया जाता था। उन्होंने कॉलीवुड में टेक्नीशियन का काम करने वाले लोगों के बच्चों के लिए प्राथमिक और माध्यमिक स्कूल भी स्थापित किए। एमजीआर ने महिलाओं के हितों के लिए भी काम किया। उन्होंने तमिलनाडू में महिलाओं के लिए विशेष बस सेवा शुरू की और राज्य में मदर टेरेसा महिला विश्वविद्यालय तथा तमिलनाडू विश्वविद्यालय नामक दो शिक्षा संस्थान भी शुरू किए। एमजी रामचंद्रन बाढ़ और सूखा जैसी प्राकृतिक आपदाओं के समय लोगों को आर्थिक और बुनियादी सुविधाएं देने के लिए हमेशा आगे रहते थे। थाई पत्रिका, द अन्ना समाचारपत्र और सथ्या व एमजीयर पिक्चर फिल्म स्टूडियो से प्राप्त होने वाली आय को वह जनकल्याण और

विज्ञानी जी.एन. रामचन्द्रन का जन्म 8 अक्टूबर, को केरला राज्य के इरेकुलम में हुवा था। इनका पूरा नाम गोपालसमुन्द्रम नारायणा रामचन्द्रन (Gopalasamudram Narayanan Ramachandran) हैं। इनके पिता का नाम जी.आर. नारायण अय्यर और माता लक्ष्मी अमाल थी। यह एक तमिल परिवार था। रामचन्द्रन के पिता एक कॉलेज में गणित के प्रोफेसर थे, इसलिए इन्हे भी बचपन से गणित में बहुत रूचि थी।
