An evening at the Carter Family Fold
The Carter Family Fold is on a long, straight, valley-wrapped road in the middle of tiny Hiltons, VA, a town known for not much more than its mountainous surroundings and proximity to the Tri-Cities region.
Approaching the Fold from the Tri-Cities drops you off with the Fold to your left, parking available along the road on the right or in small gravel parking lots connected to the historic Carter cabins and buildings adjoining the Fold itself.
An old timer in an orange Carter Family Fold t-shirt directed us into the correct parking area, chatting for a minute about the truck we drove and comparing it to a Chevy truck he bought for a good deal recently.
We parked alongside one of the cabins, a wooden rail fence separating us from the road that seemed deserted except for Saturday Fold goers.

“My mother, Janette Carter, made my grandfather, A.P., a promise in that she would see that his music lived on,” said Forrester. “He wanted people to know about his music and what he had accomplished.”
The Carter Family revolutionized the music industry by serving a crucial role in the development of country music, and the influences of A.P., Sara and Maybelle can still be heard today. The trio’s first recordings were made in as part of the famous “Bristol Sessions” that jumpstarted country music, and the Carter Family was credited for birthing the original country genre with their traditional mountain sound.
The family quickly gained popularity, not only in the South but around the nation and abroad. Featuring traditional folk songs as well as new compositions, their music resonated with audiences and established the Carter Family as one of the most successful, enduring and influential groups in music history.

The Carter Family’s legacy began in with Alvin &#;A.P.&#; Carter, Sara Carter and Maybelle Carter. The trio recorded their first musical session as part of the “Bristol Sessions” and were credited for inventing the everchanging genre we now know as “country.”
For nearly a century, the Carter Family has been honored and embraced by artists and fans across the globe, and their story has been featured in major publications such as The New York Times, LIFE Magazine and Rolling Stone.
A.P. Carter’s daughter, Janette Carter, founded the Carter Family Memorial Center in to celebrate the illustrious lives of the original Carter Family and keep the tradition of bluegrass and folk music alive. The Carter Family Fold is now directed by Janette’s daughter, Rita Forrester.
The Carter Family Fold and Museum offers families a retreat to bluegrass music. The “Fold,” as it is affectionately called, is operated to honor the famous Carter Family — A.P., Sara and Maybelle — pioneers in country music. Saturday concerts highlight the musical style made popular by the Carter Family, considered by many as country music’s first family. There’s lots of dancing and fun for the entire family.
Shows are family-oriented; no alcohol is permitted. Handicap accessible. Admission: $10 for adults; $2 for children ; children under 6 admitted free. Tickets sold online or at the door. Charter member of The Crooked Road Music Heritage Trail.
