Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan: The Remarkable Indian Classical Vocalist

History favours the winners, but a few spirits leave a legacy deeper than the conquerors who occupied the throne. Among them is Dara Shikoh, son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, a prince whose dreams for India were based on tolerance, inquiry of the mind, and spiritual harmony. A Prince Unlike Any Other

Dara Shikoh was born in in Ajmer. He was not only the eldest son of Shah Jahan but also his beloved heir. Unlike his warrior brothers, Dara found himself interested in philosophy, art, and the quest for spiritual knowledge. He studied Persian poetry, Sufism, and Sanskrit scriptures to narrow the gulf between Islam and Hinduism. His most renowned work, Majma-ul-Bahrain (The Confluence of the Two Seas), tried to bring harmony between Sufi and Vedantic schools of thought.

Vinayakrao Patwardhan was a well-known figure of his times with a multifaceted personality. An illustrious disciple of the legendary Vishnu Digambar Paluskar who devoted his life to the promotion of Hindustani music, and a gurubhai of such eminences as Prof. B.R. Deodhar, Narayanrao Vyas and Omkarnath Thakur, he had a very successful singing career. For about 52 years (from to ), he was one of the famous musicians in the Hindustani music concert arena. Vinayak Narayan Patwardhan, also known as Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan is an Indian vocalist of Gwaliar-genre of the Hindustani classical music.

His uncle Keshavrao provided him with initial training in music. In , he went to Gaandharva Mahavidyalaya at Lahore, where he was taught by Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. He later became one of the important singers of his times and also earned due respect for his austere lifestyle and dedication to the art of music. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar wanted his disciples to emulate his example and take up the teaching profession. Vinayakrao accepted teaching assignments at the various branches of the school at Bombay, Nagpur and Lahore. Vinayakrao’s sweet and high-pitched voice impressed everyone including the legendary actor-singer Balgandharva.
