Marijane Meaker was an author of pioneering young adult and lesbian fiction, including under such pen names as M.E. Kerr and Vin Packer.

Writing career

Meaker began her career as a novelist under the Vin Packer pseudonym, writing crime novels. Her novel “Spring Fire” was groundbreaking, called the first lesbian novel and the book that launched the genre of lesbian pulp fiction. Meaker wrote 20 books as Packer, including two based on the murder of Emmett Till (–). As she was writing as Packer, Meaker debuted the pseudonym Ann Aldrich, under which she wrote a series of nonfiction books about lesbianism. In , she began publishing young adult fiction as M.E. Kerr. Her debut as Kerr was “Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack!,” chosen as an ALA Notable Children’s Book and named one of the most significant works of children’s literature of the 20th century by the School Library Journal. Also as Kerr, Meaker wrote more than two dozen other books including “Gentlehands,” “Me Me Me Me Me: Not a Novel,” and “Night Kites.” She wrote several books under her own name, as well as under the pseudonyms M.J. Meaker and Mary James.

I wrote an essay once on comparing Marijane (not Marianne, as someone else wrote) Meaker's first novel, SPRING FIRE, and Patricia Highsmith's second, THE PRICE OF SALT (published in the UK as CAROL and filmed under that title not too long ago), which were published within several months of each other, were both pioneering lesbian Bildungsromans (and are key works in what is for some reason mislabeled "lesbian pulp"), and have a lot of parallels within themand Meaker and Highsmith would eventually be lovers and domestic partners in the late '50s, and never completely out of each other's orbits (Meaker wrote a memoir, HIGHSMITH: A ROMANCE OF THE s, which I recommend). Meaker used her most common s/early '60s pseudonym Vin Packer on that one, and on such later novels as THE EVIL FRIENDSHIP and SOMETHING IN THE SHADOWS, two other good starts (I first read Meaker under her notable YA novel pseudonym, M. E. Kerr, and her first novel under that name, DINKY HOCKER SHOOTS SMACK!, when I was 9 or 10yo.). Stark House has a number of hers in print.
