The following review of Gustavo Gutiérrez’s book, A Theology of Liberation: Politics, History, and Salvation, provides a summary and an appraisal of the book’s content. The purpose of Gutiérrez’s book is to explicate a theology of liberation as a love letter from God’s word to radically transform the mindset of Christianity. Gutiérrez attempts to accomplish his goal by defining significant terms, identifying the problem, and providing a potpourri of potential solutions, which he admits are not conclusive.

Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez Merino, O.P. (born 8 June in Lima) is a Peruvian theologian and Dominican priest regarded as one of the principal founders of liberation theology in Latin America. He holds the John Cardinal O’Hara Professorship of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He has been professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and a visiting professor at many major universities in North America and Europe. He is a member of the Peruvian Academy of Language, and in he was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government for his tireless work. He has also published in and been a member of the board of directors of the international journal, Concilium.

Gustavo Gutiérrez (b. 8 June ) is a Peruvian priest and founder of Liberation Theology. His attempt to interpret the meaning of Christianity within the context of the struggle for justice unleashed a revolution in Latin American theological inquiry. After training for the priesthood in Europe in the s, Gutiérrez became part of a South and Central American network of Catholic Church reformers seeking to apply the teachings of the Second Vatican Council (–) to Latin American conditions. Influenced by radicalized students, the Peruvian Marxist José Carlos Mariátegui, the author José María Arguedas, and dependency theory, Gutiérrez came to champion the liberation of the Latin American poor. In he coauthored the central texts of the famous Medellín Latin American bishops' conference that denounced social and economic inequality. In his foundational text Teología de la liberación: Perspectivas, he proposed the new theological method of theology as reflection on the commitment of Christians to construct a just society.
